Every photograph in this collection was taken in Sydney. I have spent thirty five years on this one city's coastline, from the harbour out through the Heads to Maroubra in the south and Avalon in the north.

The harbour holds the largest body of work here. It is a river valley the sea drowned. The shoreline folds back on itself so often that from one headland at Vaucluse you can count four separate bodies of water. I am usually down there before five to catch the hour when the water goes flat and first light reaches the sandstone ahead of the towers. When I turn the camera on the city itself, it is usually from the north side, from Cremorne or Bradleys Head, where the afternoon light comes over your shoulder.

The beaches run from Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte and Coogee below the eastern cliffs up to Manly, Narrabeen, Newport and Avalon on the northern side. Between them sit the ocean pools, baths cut and poured into the rock shelf, some of them more than a century ago, for swimming on days when the surf is too big.

Most of these photographs were taken at first light, in weather that keeps other people indoors. A few record a sky or a swell that lasted moments.

Every print is made in Sydney and checked by hand before it leaves. If you have one place in mind, the Sydney Harbour, Bondi, Northern Beaches and ocean pools collections go further into each.

    The photographer

I am Richard Hirst. I have photographed Sydney's harbour, the eastern beaches, the northern beaches and the ocean pools along that coast for more than thirty five years. I shoot at first light and in the weather most people stay inside for. Every photograph on this site is my own.
