About

Sydney, as you've never seen it

I'm Richard Hirst, although almost everyone calls me Hirsty.

I'm a Sydney landscape photographer with a lifelong obsession for light, weather, water and the extraordinary moments nature creates when most people aren't watching.

For more than 35 years, I've photographed Sydney's beaches, ocean pools, coastline, harbour and city. I've spent countless early mornings waiting for the sun to break through, chased storms across Sydney, watched full moons rise over the ocean and returned to the same locations again and again because no two days ever look quite the same.

I'm a full-moon lover, rainbow chaser, storm follower, wave hunter and light obsessive.

That is what my work is really about.

More than a photograph of Sydney

I don't simply want to record what a place looks like. I want to capture what it feels like to be there.

The quiet before sunrise. The energy of a summer day at Bondi. A wave exploding over an ocean pool. Sydney Harbour disappearing beneath fog. A sudden shaft of light breaking through a storm. The moon rising exactly where it may not appear again for month... or years.

Many of my photographs capture fleeting conditions that lasted only moments. Others are the result of years spent learning a location, understanding the weather and returning until everything came together.

My aim is to show familiar parts of Sydney in a way you may never have seen them before.

Photography shaped by a lifetime beside the water

I have lived near Sydney's beaches and harbour throughout my life, and that connection to the water runs through almost everything I photograph.

My journey began more than three decades ago in a tiny homemade darkroom, developing black-and-white photographs by hand. The equipment and technology have changed dramatically since then, but the thing that drives me has remained the same: the excitement of witnessing something remarkable and preserving it in a photograph.

From Bondi, Bronte and Coogee to the Northern Beaches, Sydney Harbour and beyond, the collection has grown into a visual record of the city's changing moods.
