Other Beaches

Filter

Not every beach on this coast has given me a big enough set of pictures to deserve its own shelf, and I'd rather tell you that than pad one out. So this is where the smaller collections live side by side: Avalon, Clovelly, Collaroy, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Maroubra, Mona Vale, Narrabeen and Warriewood, the stretches where I hold a handful of photographs each rather than a wall's worth.

Don't read the small numbers as a lack of interest, because it's usually the opposite. A beach ends up with four photographs instead of forty for all sorts of reasons. Some are hard to reach at the hour I work, some only come good in one season, and a couple are so particular about their conditions that I've driven home empty handed more often than I've pressed the shutter, and the pictures that survive that filter, oddly enough, tend to be the ones I'm fondest of.

And if your beach is in here, you already know it deserves better billing than it gets. The regulars at Mahon Pool or the Collaroy rock pool don't think of theirs as a minor beach, and neither do I when I'm standing on it at five in the morning with wet feet. So treat this page as a shortcut rather than a demotion. Every one of these places keeps its own collection, and clicking any photograph takes you into the full set for that stretch of sand.

If you're after somewhere along here that I haven't photographed enough yet, tell me.

    The photographer

I am Richard Hirst. I have photographed Sydney's harbour, the eastern beaches, the northern beaches and the ocean pools along that coast for more than thirty five years. I shoot at first light and in the weather most people stay inside for. Every photograph on this site is my own.

    Represented

YellowKorner carry sixteen of my photographs across their galleries. They describe me as one of Australia's leading landscape photographers. I have also been commissioned by Tourism Australia, Sydney Airport, UBS, LinkedIn and the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation.

    The print

Every photograph is printed on ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl 310gsm. Wilhelm Imaging Research rate that paper and ink pairing at more than two hundred years behind glazing. Framed pieces are assembled by hand in Australia and signed by hand on the mattboard.
