Every photograph here was taken by Richard Hirst, who has photographed Sydney's beaches, ocean pools, coastline and harbour for more than thirty five years. He began in a homemade darkroom developing black and white prints by hand. The equipment has changed completely since then. What drives him has not.
He shoots at first light and in weather most people stay indoors for, and returns to the same locations year after year, because no two days there ever look quite the same. Some of these photographs record conditions that lasted moments. Others took years of learning a place and waiting for everything to arrive at once.
His work hangs in private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas, including through the YellowKorner galleries, and has been commissioned by Tourism Australia, Sydney Airport, UBS, LinkedIn and the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation.
